Lawn installation isn’t exactly easy; there is a certain technology employed when installing artificial grass, which, if implemented properly, can ensure that the surface retains its ideal condition for many years to come. The multi-stage process involves preparing the foundation and rolling and joining the sheets, and it can take several days; it is important to maintain the proper sequence and technical requirements for each stage of work.

Steps for installing artificial grass

1. A pit under the foundation

The installation of artificial turf is always preceded by a preparation of the foundation. For this purpose, a pit is dug. Soil is removed from the site 50-60 cm deep in accordance with the trough technique. Special construction equipment — tractors with mounted buckets or excavators — is used to do so.

2. Drainage system

In most cases, the design calls for drains. By removing water, one may avoid uneven loosening and subsidence in the foundation and subsequent holes and unevenness on the surface. The system employs a small lateral trench containing drainage pipes leading to shafts at the edges.

3. Inert infill material

The technology for installing artificial grass on a football pitch involves infilling with inert materials such as gravel, sand, and chippings, which are placed into the pit in layers. The sequence and depth of the layers should be reflected in the design. Normally, a layer of sand is put on the bottom, followed by crushed stone of 40-70 mm in size, followed by crushed stone of 20-40 mm, and then very small crushed stone of not more than 20 mm. It’s covered with gravel or granite chippings.

4. Cushioned underlayment

Synthetic material such as crumb rubber with polyurethane is used to cover the layers of gravel.

5. Rolling the cover

The foundation is packed down with a roller. Sometimes the technology employed for installing artificial grass requires the creation of a small slope with the use of a sand machine. Linear drainage is placed around the perimeter to divert rain and melt water from the field. The angle of the slope created depends on the terrain and must accord with the design.

6. Installing rolls

The foundation must be completely dry. The cover is packed down, and the rolls of artificial grass may be rolled only on a dry covering. This must also be done in dry weather with an air temperature of at least + 10 ° C. The technology for installing the artificial grass on a football pitch calls for the rolls to overlap by 15-30 mm. Next, the canvas is left for 10-20 hours in order for the internal stress from prolonged storage in a roll to pass. The material straightens out and stabilizes. Then uneven edges are trimmed so that the rolls adjoin. Special equipment can be used.

7. Gluing sheets

Before undertaking to glue the sheets together, it is important to check that the sheets are lying flat and there are no folds or empty spaces, since there is a risk of their occurrence during the installation of artificial grass stemming from the length of the sheets. Gluing is carried out immediately after the edges are trimmed so that there might not be any distortions as a result of daily temperature changes. For this purpose, connecting tape (25-30 cm) and two-component glue (consumption 350-550 g/lm) are employed.

8. Marking

The installation of artificial grass, especially for a football pitch, is accompanied by line marking. The lines are cut into a sheet that has already been installed and glued into place with a double-bladed cutter. After that the edges of the sheet are rolled back, and the seam tape is unrolled. Glue is then applied to it, and a strip of grass of a different colour is glued on.

9. Finishing infill

The installation of football pitch rolls of artificial grass winds up with the addition of 0.3-0.6 mm layers of sand and 1-3 mm rubber granules. A spreader is employed for this purpose. The thickness of the layers can vary depending on the height of the grass, which may have tufts from 24 to 60 mm. After the sand has been spread, the grass needs to be brushed and left to settle.

The grass is brushed a final time with special brushes. After 3-6 months, rubber granules will have to be added once again. In conclusion, the final layer of infill should reach 10-15 mm. Following installation, garbage is removed from the lawn and the surface is put in order with the help of technical devices. They will also be needed to care for the lawn during operation.
